In this article we explore some of the myths that surround Multifocals, and some frequently asked questions:
“I heard it is hard to get used to bifocals?”
The visible line bifocals are easier to adapt to than the invisible PALs. The learning curve varies from patient to patient and is dependent on the prescription, the frame and lens style. In the progressive design it is important to look through the top part of the glasses to view distance, and then drop your eyes to look through the bottom part of the glasses to read something up close. It does take practice to learn to look through the correct part of the lens for the correct visual task, but once you have adapted to the PALs the benefits are plenty. The younger you are and weaker the reading Rx the easier it is to adapt. The high quality progressive designs will be easier to work with as they provide fewer distortions.
“I don’t want to wear bifocals, it will make me look like my parents!”
Multifocals come with the traditional visible line variety in the way of flat top bifocal, trifocal, executive style, and round top bifocals. These lenses only provide vision for far and near. The invisible line multifocal called the progressive additional lens provides vision in all distances, including the intermediate or computer vision.
“Is there a difference when I pay more for a progressive lens?”
Yes. The progressive design does vary in quality. The best progressive lens will provide with the widest reading zone with very little blur. The top of the line progressive design will have the advanced personalization and the bi-aspheric design. The digital bi-aspheric customized design has a few benefits such as providing the sharpest vision across the entire lens to eliminate peripheral distortion. It also gives the eye a natural appearance for the observer, and has thinner lenses that are flatter and lighter. The lenses are also 100% UVA & UVB protected. These lenses take into account not only your prescription and standard optical measurements, but also the shape of the frame in which your lens will be placed. We often tend to visually and physiologically adapt to lenses that may not be optimal for us. We learn to cope with an approximation of good vision. These lenses offer precise optical stability because they are made with more optimization axes on the back surfaces providing more optimization zones. Each lens is personalized for the patient’s exact combination of sphere, cylinder and axis for optimum optics across the Rx range. Lenses are fully compensated for each patient’s vertex, fit height, pantoscopic tilt and frame wrap angle. Standard and even aspheric lenses are designed to cover many prescriptions with a few base curves, but they can’t precisely match most patients vision needs.
“I am on the computer all day, are there any lenses that can help?”
Yes. There are office lenses for the emerging need for digital distance. These are specialized progressive design only for two distances instead of the traditional three. There are lenses that extend the intermediate zone (wider and comfortable for indoor vision), and others that extend the near zone (provides more depth than reading glasses).
Digital media screens from our LED monitors, laptop screens, phones and tablets emit a powerful blue light. Long exposure to digital devices can cause eye fatigue, and/or strain symptoms such as headaches, dry or irritated eyes and blurry vision. Nikon’s SeeCoat Blue AR coating enhances screen contrast and protects eyes from glare and flicker by reducing blue light.
“How can I protect the lenses to last longer?”
It is all in the anti-reflective coating you purchase. For instance, a hard coat will only provide scratch resistance. However, Nikon’s SeeCoat anti-reflective coating or Essilor’s Crizal anti-reflective coating will provide you with more scratch resistance, provide longer lens durability, avoid dust accumulation on the lens, reduce the frequency of lens cleaning, and is optimized for transparency. These lenses give a more natural look, and will be easier to clean and keep clean while remaining smudge resistant.
